When I run or bike, I like to carry an ID. Odd quirk I know, but considering I might be miles away from my house, or car, depending on where I'm working out that day, and there is always the possibility that something might happen to me, I've decided I would like for people to know who I am if they found me lying on the road. Thus, I carry my drivers license.
The license, however is annoying, especially when running. If I put it in the pocket of my running pants, it rubs against me. Not a big deal for a 3 mile run, but when I'm out for 3+ hours, that little bit of rubbing turns into a painful sore. I've been black and blue due to the edges of the license.
Instead, I could keep the license in the pack that I carry with me on long runs that has my water and food. The problem is that I can lose the ID when I pull out some food to eat in the middle of a run - like I did at the Sacramento Cowtown 1/2 marathon. Last thursday I had to go spend a morning at the DMV get a new license. Did you know bars don't always accept a passport because it has no physical description on it? Weird, it can get me in to Europe, but not into the Blue Cue.
Here I am in a dilemma. Do I deal with the sores or the occasional loss of an id? Then I found out, I don't have to decide. I could buy a bracelet, or an anklet with all my information on it, and because I bike with a group called hammering wheels, I get a 20% discount. So I bought myself a nice, soft, no edges, id that I wear on my ankle - no sores from it so far. It's actually quite comfortable. It has my name, birthday, my city, a couple of contact numbers, the fact I have Crohn's disease, and the words "Because I can" ( you need to figure out the question). It's such a silly, simple thing, but I am so glad to have it, it's not funny.
