So, I went to the Northern California Renaissance Faire last weekend. It was a two hour drive just to get there. I wore my normal fair garb (for those that don't know it includes a shirt, bodice, two skirts, tights or socks, shoes, belt, and plenty of belt accessories.)By the time they day was over, I was tired, dirty, and had a two hour drive home. Was it worth it....with out a doubt.
See, for the past few days, I have been trying to figure out what is it about faire that I love. I get faire cravings in the winter, and despite my love for dicken's faire, it just isn't the same.
There could be many reasons to love faire, the flirting, the clothes, the cool stuff to look at, the shows, the food, etc. My thinking? I believe that for one day (or more), people who go to faire get to pretend that life is a little simpler. There are no computers, no e-mail, no flush toilets(!!!!), no tv, no radio's. Instead we get to pretend that singing, dancing, flirting, joking, and talking are all the entertainment we need. No one looks at you funny for wearing weird clothes and dancing down the street. In fact you are expected to wear weird clothes and the dancing is a bonus. No one cares if your clothes don't match, if you have mud on your face, or your dancing is just bad. They may laugh at you, but isn't that the purpose? Real entertainment, not polished , air brushed shows. Faire is a place to go for a peek at a simpler life, and then be able to go home and have that wonderful hot shower in the evening.
There is also a commradere amoung the cast that is wonderful. I know, if something happend to me, if I needed help, I could go to anyone in garb and they would help me. Where else do you get to say something like that?
Does it come as any suprise then, when my guildmistress said that my guild might be at this particular faire for the first time next year (we are washer women, we need a well, up to this point, there has been no well, but there maybe one next year)my reponse was " well, if there is someone to carpool with, I will work faire next year." I am already looking foward to it.
