I, as well as many of you, saw the second installment of Pirates of the Caribbean last night. Me, myself, and I, were utterly disappointed in the movie. My intuition says that most of you were too (although I will openly admit that my intuition is not known for being accurate). usually, after seeing a good movie, we will talk about it, someone will say "that was great,", others have smiles on their faces, and others are excited about seeing it again. This time, we walked out of the theater, said good-bye and went our separate ways. Of course we could have all been tired, considering all but I needed to work the next day (I have decided I am on sabbatical, I'm not unemployed.) But I just didn't get that feeling of excitement that I have sensed before.
Could it be our hopes were to high? The first movie was wonderful and that's our basis for comparison. Or was the first movie wonderful because our hopes were too low? I remember that most of us were worried about how could someone possible make a decent movie from the ride and walked into that first showing with trepidation. Afterwards, I adored Cap. Jack Sparrow and wished I could be a pirate myself.
So was the first one really good and the second just not as good or was it our expectations that influenced our opinions? Personally, I think the second one was just not very good. Now I don't plan on giving any spoliers for anyone who hasn't seen the movie (because I am coming to the realization that more people read this thing that I had orginally assumed. I should, therefore, apologize for my mispellings, poor english, and opinionated viewpoint. I try to be a nice person, I really do. It's just doesn't always come out that way.) but I do want to say that there were a few good one-liners and funny situations. But the story itself... I mean come on. I could accept cursed coins and men/skeltons walking underwater, that was fun. This just went way overboard and jumped my limits of acceptablility.
Some times, in the second movie, they just repeated the same techniques that they had used in the first movie to get the story across. Worked once, won't work a second time. Every once in a while I felt deja vu. Will the third movie be any better? I am keeping my fingers crossed (and I know the costume that I want to sew for opening night. I have a year to get it done.)
